Site’s visit
Var’s coast visit
Décember 2003
General introduction to the structure, objectives and methodological suppositions of the visit.

Marc LASAYGUES and Odile JACQUEMIN gave a brief description of the programme : the first two days were spent visiting sites in an attempt to fully appreciate the potential of having an ecomuseum in the Var department, in terms of diversity and coherence. The third day was devoted to discussions and debates held on Porquerolles Island, which will help illustrate in a concrete manner the importance of the notion of insularity within a local territorial identity. This visit will help us understand the notion of “an island within a territory”, recalling the notion of “an amphitheatre within a university”.

Choosing the guest speakers and sites to visit is part of the rigorous scientific work carried out by the AMPHIBIA Scientific Interest Grouping, created in 1999, under the supervision of Odile JACQUEMIN and Jean-Louis PACITTO, who also developed the PEP Centre for Cultural Heritage and Economics in the Var department dedicated to “landscapes between land and sea”. The PEP aims at enhancing the economic value of territories by highlighting the social and cultural aspects of such landscapes. The landscape is used as a mediator and “instructor” to communicate - about the sites and based on the history of the sites - an understanding of the complexity of the territory involved in implementing future projects. Site visits were developed and implemented to illustrate a research approach developed by the PEP to establish a project centred on a territory, beyond the notion of a museum and a site .

A guided tour on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December 2003 was organised around this approach, based on the theme of “industrial landscapes” to cover the widest possible variety of heritage sites. By visiting the most interesting sites from the Var department industrial heritage, one after the other in a given time, it was possible to provide a first “mostra” of the ecomuseum potential. The choice of sites complemented the sites that were visited by sea in May 2003, particularly the Bormettes mines, the torpedo factory in Londe-les-Maures and the Cap Garonne museum in Pradet.

Generally speaking, industrial heritage is considered as a landscape resulting from man’s industrial activities in good terms with his territory . We chose to use “water” - salt and fresh water - as the key tool for analysing and understanding both the history of urban development and the modern complexity of managing such issues.

One of the complexities of the territories we visited resided in the interrelation between the military and civil maritime industry - characteristic of coastal areas in general and of an intense industrial activity in terms of agriculture and tourism - which began at the same time in the 19th century.

Three methodological principles - developed by the PEP - used to consider the territory as an ecomuseum were applied :

1/ Principle of “lived-in landscapes”, which takes into account the wealth of heritage in terms of both territorial and human potential, without dissociating the territory in question from those living in the territory, both on land and at sea. It is therefore question of composing the welcoming party with both local players and projects holders. No less than 45 players were mobilised to welcome the European delegation.

2/ Principle of “research, action and reciprocity” The collective visit of the sites brings together people from different areas of expertise, encouraging interaction between local researchers, politicians and visitors. This stage helps enlarge both the theoretical and operational knowledge base, pooling knowledge from academics, locals and associations. The visit provides an opportunity for players to come into contact with the territory, as well as enabling contact between the various different players. Such an approach helps advance projects, particularly within the context of helping the inhabitants re-appropriate the future of their territory . It is therefore important to mobilise local partners involved in the European project from the very beginning and to understand how the programme concerns them and what they can expect from the programme. 3/ Principle of exploring territories “between land and sea” Exploration, in terms of “coastal navigation”, is an integral part of the territory, from the Toulon roadstead to the town of Cavalaire. Exploration of a territory from the sea enables arbitrarily compartmented spaces to become connected, as well as allowing a different perception of a territory. The site visit not only awakens our senses but also our intellect, in an attempt to fully understand the territory. From one panoramic viewpoint to another, we remain alert and on the lookout.
