Through the Industrial Heritage between Land and Sea project, the
association intends to reconstruct the story of the works which
emerged at the end of the XIXth century all along the south-western
coast of the island, in a stretch comprised between the Buggerru and
Canalgrande cliffs, the bays of Cala Domestica and Masua, the
sandy areas of Fontanamare and Piscinas. Several realizations in
mining engineering are still bearing testimony to the high degree of
evolution attained on that territory, within which complex systems of
extraction, processing and export of the ore have been created. A
special reference to the theme of the project is constituted by the
relationship of the railways tracks to the routes of the boats which
used to transport the ore from the mining sites to the warehouses
located all along the coast, and then from there unto Carloforte
harbour, in San Pietro island.
‘Sella Pit for the Geo-mineral Park’ is a non profit association which
intends to contribute to the development of the finalities defined by
Ministerial Decree which has instituted the Geo-mineral, Historic and
Environmental Park of Sardinia. Its aim is to promote any initiative
tending to the enhancement of the heritage which the mining history
has bequeathed to the Sardinian community and which, besides, has
been declared heritage of the mankind by the UNESCO.
