Ministry of Culture Ephorate for Modern Monuments of Central Macedonia, Grèce
The Gulf of Thermaikos, located in the northwestern part of the Aegean
Sea, between the seashore of Pieria and Chalkidiki peninsula and
dominated by Mount Olympos, is representing within the project another
type of geographical entity. Areas with very diverse characteristics are
scattered around its waters, from the wetlands on the rivers estuaries to the
urban settlements of Thessaloniki and its surroundings and finally to the
high slopes of Mikro and Megalo Emvolo caps, the saltworks of Angelohori
and the fisheries port of Michaniona. The historical importance of the site is
documented since the antiquity, and is based on the archaeological
evidence of prehistoric settlements, antique colonies, harbours, sanctuaries
and forts of the last two centuries. The traditional production and trade of
salt, tobacco, silk cocoons, woolen textiles and leather manufacture
developed during the last quarter of the 19th c. in a mostly steamdriven
industry of textiles and leather, food and beverages, brick and tiles and in
the tobacco commercial treatment. The modernization of the infrastructure
in transportation and port premises and the networks of water and gas
supply supported the industrial development in the Gulf area. The Ephorate
for Modern Monuments of Central Macedonia (Ministry of Culture) is
promoting the project, having already carried out research and developed
activities for the conservation and enhancement of industrial heritage sites.
The local part of the project is focusing the planing and implementation of
the “Ecomuseum of Thermaikos Gulf” and involves several local institutions
including the universities, the municipalities, private and state archives,
NGOs, public and private authorities.
